The aliens are back posing great danger to humanity in Independence Day: Resurgence. Director Roland Emmerich revealed that the film will expand more on the universe, while a new comic book will also be released that will bridge the two films in the franchise.

The sequel to the block buster 1996 hit is underway and as reported by Den of Geek, the film is currently in post-production. Emmerich is overseeing the editing and other post-production work after filming concluded in late August.

But while there is still extensive work to be done before the film hits theaters, Emmerich recently revealed details about the film's plot. As reported by Game Spot, Emmerich revealed that the sequel will not be as simple as the first film.

"It's only like one of the hives, like kind of moving around. What we did this time, we tried to expand the universe, too. It's not as simple as the last one because you cannot make it as simple as the last one.", Emmerich said.

"Also, it's a little bit about what happened to our world when you know that they are coming back. We had twenty years to come together as a planet and to build incredible things to have a little more even fight", he added.  

Moreover, as reported by Screen Rant, a new comic book is also set to be released for the franchise. Without revealing its plot, it was reported that it will be a "rich psychological drama" that will pick up after the events of the first film and will usher the fans to the next movie. Editor Steve White also revealed that the upcoming comic book will take the mythos of the first film, and maybe even add a little darkness to it.

Having said that Independence Day: Resurgence is currently in post-production, a trailer could be released anytime soon. The film will pick up 20 years after the events of the first film when humans have been able to create a more sophisticated defense system to fight against the aliens. However, with the invaders' more advanced technology in their return, the fate of the Earth are left in the hands of few brave men and women.

Independence Day: Resurgence is set to hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
