Android 6.0 Marshmallow has a native file manager but reports say it is difficult to access. The Android M file organizer reportedly offers limited functionality compared to similar third-party apps.

MobileSyrup reported that users finally get a file managing app in the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow- a feature that is long-sought after in Android software. The file manager is directly built into the Android M OS, but is reportedly difficult to access.

Neowin reported that the file manager in Android 6.0 Marshmallow offers limited functionality. The native app is said to perform only basic functions like browsing, searching, filtering, and sorting documents. The app does not support creating new folders and deleting existing files.

Users who want a more powerful file managing software are advised to use third-party alternatives instead of the file manager in Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Examples include ES File Explorer, Astro, and Antek Explorer. According to WCCF Tech, the file manager in Android 6.0 Marshmallow is hidden and can be accessed on a device by opening Settings, tapping Storage/USB, scrolling down, and tapping Explore. The app enables file sorting and sharing using an installed app. Users can also find a file with the Android M file manager's search function.

Although the file manager in Android 6.0 Marshmallow has limited functionality, it can offer some convenience to users who have microSD on their devices. Some Nexus devices do not have microSD card slots though handsets from Samsung, LG, and HTC carry microSD slots.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is the latest Android OS released by Google to select Nexus devices. Android M offers new features like app permissions system, native fingerprint scanner support, battery management, and improved search features.

Non-Nexus devices will also get the file manager feature when the Android 6.0 Marshmallow rolls out to their units. It is possible that the file manager in Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be further improved in later software updates.
