HBO is planning to adapt "Watchmen", the popular DC comics written by Alan Moore, into a television series. It has been reported that the cable network, home of "Game of Thrones", "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective", had a discussion with Snyder to bring the gritty drama to the small screen.

As first reported by Collider, HBO has released a statement regarding their involvement with the TV project. “Preliminary discussions regarding Watchmen have occurred but we have no additional information and no deals are in place,” the cable network said.

While details are still scarce at this point, followers of "Watchmen" think that it’s a smart move for HBO to streamline the comics via a serialized format. With "Game of Thrones" closing in a couple of years, picking up a superhero-themed TV show can offer big numbers for HBO.

A report from Hollywood addressed this theory, “The fact that HBO has been quick to shut down several of its high-profile in-development series recently means that they’re probably in the market for a big-budget mass-appeal series,” the site wrote.

Fans of "Watchmen "who followed the characters both in the comics and film will have to wait for further developments following the initial meeting of HBO and Snyder.

CNET reported that everything is still up in the air with regards to "Watchmen" format. “At this early stage it's not clear whether the TV show would tell a new story in the "Watchmen" world or follow the film in adapting the original comic. There's a huge wealth of material in the comic, a multi-character epic intertwining a murder mystery with flashbacks spanning decades of personal and political history,” the site explained.

To this end, fans have yet to wait for further developments to find out whether HBO will categorize the project as a prequel or something with a contemporary approach. Casting and production details of "Watchmen" are also yet to be determined.
