The upcoming 'Ghostbusters' has yet to even release its trailer but rumors of a follow up have already pervaded entertainment sites. This follow-up is said to be an animated 'Ghostbusters' movie to be produced by Ivan Reitman. While this news is still unconfirmed, Sigourney Weaver's return to the 'Ghostbusters' movie is definite.

According to Cinema Blend, the 'Ghostbusters' animated movie is a step towards a 'Ghostbusters' Cinematic Universe. Following the all-female led 'Ghostbusters' live -action reboot, the animation will cater to the possibility of a ghost's perspective for the narrative. Sony, allegedly, is ready for pitches and that Reitman, the original 'Ghostbusters' director, will be producing this endeavour. No director has been rumored to take the helm.

Sky News Australia reported that Sony denied such plans a few weeks ago, trade insiders insist that the animated movie that the project is still a green, and will start soon. The animated take on the 'Ghostbusters' will be the second of its kind, with the 1986 to 1991 'The Real Ghostbusters'. The series had 140 episodes in 7 seasons, and featured the classic characters from the two 'Ghostbusters' movies.

However, the character caricatures were quite different. It is also a question whether the rumored 'Ghostbusters' animated movie will feature the female version of the ghost extermination squad.

Meanwhile, The Guardian reported that Sigourney Weaver has come back for the 'Ghostbusters' live action reboot. Director Paul Feig himself has confirmed this on Twitter. Weaver played cellist Dana Barrett in both 'Ghostbusters' films in 1984 and 1989. It is unknown whether she'll play the same role for the upcoming film.

The 'Ghostbusters' movie has provided a reunion of the original cast, with Weaver joining the original 'Ghostbusters' cast Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson. Sadly, the fourth member of the gang, Harold Ramis died in February 2014

Feig's 'Ghostbusters' movie reboot will be out in cinemas 15 July 2016. The movie features Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as the new 'Ghostbusters' and Chris Hemsworth as the new team's secretary. The idea of an animated 'Ghostbusters' echoes the planned Spider-Man animated movie in theaters, and should it happen, Sony is possibly starting trend here.
