'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' director J. J. Abrams revealed that he also sustained a broken back after helping Harrison Ford who was injured on set during the filming of the 7th installment in the franchise. He kept his condition it a tight secret until recently.

According to IGN, Abrams publicized his back injury in 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart'. The director broke his back after attempting to lift the door of the Millennium Falcon which crushed Harrison Ford, who plays Han Solo in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', beneath it. He was all praises for Ford's speedy recovery that overtook his own.

In another report by Tech Times, the prop's door was made heavier by the hydraulics system. Ford was reportedly pinned down with the door pressed against his ankle breaking it. He stayed calm until members of the crew came to his aid.  Abrams recalled that the force of the door turned Ford's foot 90 degrees in the wrong direction when he went to 73 year old actor's rescue.

Unfortunately, he also suffered an injury on that day. He said to the host, "I'm trying to help lift [the door] up and I feel this pop in my back... I go to the doctor a couple of days later, and he goes, 'Oh, you have a broken back.'" Abrams sustained an injury on his lower back - specifically the L4 (lumbar vertebra) - which he kept to himself in secret until the recent interview.

Vanity Fair reports that the director kept his injury a secret by way of concealing the back brace he has to wear under his clothes. He recalled that it only took a month so see Ford fully sprinting. The news of Ford's unlucky ankle accident last year on June 12, 2014 at Pinewood Studios sent movie plans reeling. Every lost day of filming cost hundreds of thousands, which cannot be taken back.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is an upcoming epic science-fiction film in the 'Star Wars' series to be released on December 18, 2015. Several cast members have reprised their roles under the direction of J. J. Abrams. The American filmmaker is known for his previous work line-up which includes 'Mission Impossible' and 'Star Trek'.
