Pacific Rim 2 is in the works and this time, the movie will focus more on the Kaijus. Some of the cast members from the previous movie are expected to comeback, although, rumors continue that Charlie Hunnam might not be reprising his role as Raleigh. The upcoming film is also said to be a springboard for subsequent Pacific Rim installments.

Yes, Pacific Rim 2 is underway and director Guilllermo Del Toro said that the focus in the upcoming film will not so much be on the Jaeger Pilots but rather more on the Kaijus.

Aside from that, he also revealed that he and screenwriter Zak Penn are working on the movie's screenplay. Del Toro revealed that they have started brainstorming for new ideas for the upcoming movie.

"We are three years away, so to spoil anything would be fantastically silly of me," Del Toro said. What I can tell you: [screenwriter Zak Penn] and I really went in, we started with [screenwriter Travis Beacham] about a year and a half ago, kicking ideas back and forth. And, admittedly, I said to Zak, let's keep kicking ideas till we find one that really, really turns the first movie on its ear, so to speak."

The renowned directo also revealed that one of the most difficult parts in creating the movie is the fact that the story does not have a background.

"It was hard to create a world that did not come from a comic book," he said.

"That had its own mythology, so we had to sacrifice many aspects to be able to cram everything in the first movie. Namely, for example 'the Drift,' this was an interesting concept. [Then there was] this portal that ripped a hole into the fabric of our universe, what were the tools they were using? And we came up with a really, really interesting idea."Del Toro added.

While reports are persistent that actors Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are set to reprise their roles as Dr. Geiszller and Gottlieb, rumors have surfaced that Charlie Hunnam might not come back as Raleigh. Although Del Toro has not confirmed or denied anything yet, he said that Raleigh's character has already solved his issues, and is no longer on the same journey.

"We are taking the characters into a completely different journey this time because Raleigh for me solved his problem the minute he was able to go full circle and save Mako by sacrificing himself, which is what he couldn't do with his brother. He's not on that journey anymore; he's on a new journey." Del Toro said.

Since the first film became an international box office hit, the pressure is now on for Del Toro to make the second film a success. But it's not just that, as the upcoming Pacific Rim 2 is said to serve as a bridge towards other future sequels, specifically, Pacific Rim 3.

Pacific Rim 2 will still be directed as well as co-produced by Guillermo Del Toro. The story is by Travis Beacham,  and written by Del Toro and Zak Penn. It is set to hit theaters in August 04,2017.
