A test video for The Hateful Eight received praises after it was shown using a 70 mm anamorphic film. Shot with the use of old fashioned-lenses, the film can also be watched in digital form.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the test footage was shown at the Paramount Theater on Saturday during the Cine Gear Expo held at the Paramount lot. The video, which was projected on a 70 mm anamorphic film by Oscar winner cinematographer Robert Richardson, was lauded by viewers. It showed a close-up of actors and indoor and outdoor shots at different time and lighting intervals.  In fact, even Director Quentin Tarantino was said to have bounced from his seat while watching it. He was quoted as saying that he aimed for viewers to get back to watching movies in cinemas. Tarantino wanted a unique Western film. The last time the Ultra Panavision 70 anamorphic lenses were used was in 1966 for the movie Khartoum. Richardson went to Panavision in the hopes of finding something different to use for production. Panavision had to modify the lenses in just a few months. The Hateful Eight was filmed in Telluride, Colorado and Red Studios.

A.V. Club says that the difference with these lenses is that they make the movie look grander.

Screen Crush reports that the 70 mm lens will be more appreciated if it will be suited to the right screens. This is why the film will be retrofitted in selected 50 theaters in cities. However, this does not mean that the movie will not be watched in other cinemas or countries where almost of the moviehouses are already digital. The Hateful Eight will be also made available digitally.

Meanwhile, there are also reports that the classic lenses used in The Hateful Eight will also be used in Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One.
