Aliens and Dinosaurs Dominate Steven Spielberg’s Highest Grossing Movies of All Time

There are only few directors in Hollywood that can turn a movie into a blockbuster film and the first name that usually comes to mind is Steven Spielberg. When he is behind the camera, the film will surely dominate in the box office. A large portion of Spielberg's movies has established box office records. In fact, out of the 100 highest grossing movies of all time, Steven Spielberg was behind the camera in eight of them. His other notable films include "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Minority Report", "War of the Worlds", "Schindler's List", and "Saving Private Ryan", to name just a few.

Steven Spielberg worked his way into Hollywood writing for a television show in 1969 and was immediately chosen by Universal Studios to direct films for television. He became a breakout director in the 1970s and 1980s. He founded Dreamworks Studios and continues to direct high grossing movies. Truly, he is one of the most recognizable directors and also one of the most influential people when it comes to movie making. His illustrious directing career has made him one of the best in the industry and here we will look at five of his highest grossing movies of all time, as reported by Top 5.

5. Raiders of the Lost Ark - $248,159,971

Hitting theatres in 1981, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is the first film in the Indiana Jones series. The movie catapulted the career of Harrison Ford into superstar status. It made $8,305,823 on its opening weekend and ranks as the 70th highest grossing movie of all time. 

4. Jaws - $260,000,000

Released in 1975, the monster of the deep checks in as Spielberg's fourth highest grossing movie of all time. Jaws grossed $7,061,513 during its opening weekend and ranks as the 56th highest grossing movie of all time. It catapulted Spielberg into one of the greatest directors Hollywood has ever seen.

3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull  - $317,101,119

The combination of Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf contributed to making Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull the third highest grossing Spielberg movie of all time. Shown in theaters in 2008, the latest of the Indiana Jones movies made $100,137,835 on its opening weekend. It ranks as the 29th top grossing movie of all time.

2. Jurassic Park - $402,453,882

Watch out there's a dinosaur on the loose. Shown in 1993, Jurassic Park was the first movie to introduce CGI technology to movie making. The movie features bigger-than-life dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Jurassic Park grossed $47 million on its opening weekend which makes it the 16th highest grossing movie of all time.

1. E.T : Extra Terrestrial - $435,110,554

Steven Spielberg's highest grossing movie of all time is not from around here. Shown in 1982, "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" opened with a whopping $11,835,389 on its first weekend. The movie that tells the story about a boy and an alien he helped return home is the sixth highest grossing movie of all time.
