Sony Pictures is bringing back the iconic, high-grossing slasher film "I Know What You Did Last Summer," according to a report Deadline early this week.

The 1997 horror flick, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michele Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Ryan Phillippe, made a worldwide success and spawned a sequel the following year.

The movie reboot will be written by Mike Flanagan, director and co-writer of the recent horror movie "Oculus." His partner Jeff Howard is also on board, along with Neal Moritz ("Fast and Furious" franchise) who produced the original movie.

With other reports claiming Flanagan will also be producing the upcoming reboot, the "Oculus" co-writer/producer made clear his involvement in the "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Flanagan took to Twitter to say that he is only on board as a scribe.

His tweet reads, "Happy to be writing a new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' (I'm NOT, however, directing or producing... Not sure where that came from).

According to Time, the movie will be an adaptation of the 1973 novel of the same name by author Lois Duncan. The 1997 movie revolved around a group of high school seniors being followed by a killer after covering up their involvement fatal accident.

Actors Johnny Galecki and Anne Heche also appeared in supporting roles in the original movie. The 1998 sequel entitled, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" saw the return of Hewitt and Prinze reprising their roles along with new cast members Brandy and Mekhi Phifer, according to the Daily Mail.

In 2006, a third straight-to-DVD titled "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" was released. It established a new plotline and did not feature any of the original cast members.

The original "I Know What You Did Last Summer" grossed $125 million in worldwide box office, while its 1998 sequel earned $84 million.

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" is expected to be released by Sony sometime in 2016.
