"Pacific Rim" director Guillermo Del Toro recently revealed that he and writer Zak Penn are planning to have a sequel of the robot-themed action movie.

Del Toro told Buzzfeed that they are planning to feature completely new sequences that are different from the plot of the first movie. This announcement from Del Toro put an end to speculations that the upcoming movie will be a prequel to the first, saying that he was not interested with the first wave of invasions in the film.

In an interview with Empire, cast Max Martini (Herc Hansen) said, "I don't know if it's a prequel or a sequel, but if it's a prequel you'll learn more about Herc's family history. But Guillermo has such a vivid imagination, it could go anywhere."

The first "Pacific Rim" movie starred actors including Diego Klatenhoff as Yancy Beckett, Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Beckett, and Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost. The cast also included Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Muri, Charlie Day as Dr. Newton Geiszler, and Burn Gorman as Gottlieb.

According to Hallels, Del Toro, has confirmed that while production of the film hasn't started yet, the story line is well underway. In addition, Universal Studios announced that "Pacific Rim 2" is slated for release in 2017, meaning the production still has plenty of time to make the second installment.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Crave, Charlie Day revealed that his character, Dr. Geiszler, might assume a more villainous role in the second film. "I remember when I first met with [del Toro] that he liked the idea of Newt becoming a bit of a villain in the second film," he told Crave.

"But, I think over the course of making the film, and the way the character resonated with the audience, I don't think he would want to turn him into a villain now, but I really have no idea," Day added.

Moreover, Hunnam and Kikuchi are confirmed to be part of Pacific Rim 2, along with Day. Kikuchi also dished out that Elba might also appear, despite the character's death in the first film.

"Pacific Rim 2" is scheduled to hit the theaters on April 17, 2017.
