2014 Ten Tallest Buildings in the World

The world is constantly evolving, as technological advancement led to many structural and mechanical developments that had happened in the recent times. Prominent evidence of this advancement are the establishment of skyscrapers. These tall buildings provide another dimension in our environment, and had changed the overall skyline of the globe.

There is strong competition between skyscrapers from different parts of the world based on the latest equipment and technology used to build them. A governing council sets standards on how each skyscraper is being measured. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habits (CTBUH) is a non-profit international group that lists the tallest skyscrapers around the globe, among other responsibilities. Currently, the council lists Burj Khalifa in Dubai as the world's tallest building to date.

Below are ten of the tallest buildings in the world according to CTBUH.

1. Burj Khalifa (Dubai, UAE). This skyscraper was named as the world's tallest building after its completion in 2010. Architects Merrill, Owings and Skidmore designed this sturdy 828-meter skyscraper that features more than 150 floors. Burj Khalifa is currently one of Dubai's famous attractions according to tourists.

2. Shanghai Tower (Shanghai, China). The next tallest building is almost 200 meters shorter than Burj Khalifa, according to CTBUH measuring guidelines. Although it is still in the process of its completion, Shanghai Tower is already coined as the second tallest skyscraper. What's fascinating is that it will reportedly feature the fastest elevators in the globe, clocking in at a dizzying 18 meters per second.

3. Makkah Clock Royal Tower Hotel (Mecca, Saudi Arabia). This skyscraper's unique feature is the clock tower that can be seen as far as 25 kilometers. It was completed some time in 2012.

4. One World Trade Center (New York, USA).This fourth tallest building had been completed at 541 meters in height on 2013. Aside from being the tallest skyscraper in the United States, the building was constructed on the site of the former World Trade Center, which was destroyed in horrific fashion last September 11, 2001 by terrorists.

5. CTF Finance Center (Guangzhou, China). The Chow Tai Fook Finance Center secures the fifth spot despite the fact that construction on the infrastructure is still ongoing in Guangshou, China. This 530-meter building will be completed in 2016.

6. Taipei 101 (Taipei, Taiwan). Once the world's tallest building, Taipei 101 is now occupying the 6th place after Burj Khalifa surpassed its length back in 2007. This skyscraper is located in the heart of the metropolitan Taipei, housing, obviously,101 stories. In 2004, its design was acknowledged and won an Emporis Skyscraper Award.

7. Shanghai World Finance Center (Shanghai, China). This is skyscraper that belongs among the world's tallest is situated in Shanghai, China, near Shanghai Tower. With its structural design, Shanghai World Finance Center is referred to as the 'bottle opener' of the East.

8. International Commerce Center (Hong Kong). With almost 120 floors, the International Commerce Center is the tallest standing building in Hong Kong. Its 1,588-feet structure was completed in 2010.

9 and 10. Petronas Towers 1 and 2 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). The twin towers of Petronas in Kuala Lumpur became the world's tallest building after their completion in 1998. Situated at the capital city of Malaysia, these famous buildings feature a sky bridge that connects both skyscrapers on its 41st and 24nd floors.
