Texas-based shipbreaker All Star Metals purchased the decommissioned USS Forrestal for one cent. The company would be towing the 1,067-foot super-carrier to Brownsville, Texas to be scrapped and recycled in the next few years. All Star Metals said they were still in the process of laying out the final plans for the towing. They expected to tow the ship be the end of 2013. It is currently docked at the US Navy's Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Pennsylvania.

The USS Forrestal was best remembered for the fires that killed 134 men and injured over 300 people. The explosion was triggered by stray voltage which hit a plane on the ship's flight deck.

In its August 1954 issue, Popular Science reported that the USS Forrestal was built at a cost of USD 217 million. According to Fox News, this is equivalent to USD 2 billion today. Over 16,000 people built the ship which was launched on December 11, 1954.
