Indian companies had been known for their low-cost manufacturing expertise. As agrochemical patents would be expiring by 2020, global companies had kept a close eye with Indian firms. Agrochemical patents are valued at several billions of dollars or more

A total of 50 agrochemical products had been expected to be taken off from the patent and manufacturing list. The said patents had been valued at USD9 billion. The expiration of said patents would cause buyout moves in emerging markets like India.

Japan had already started forming alliances with Indian agrochemical firms. In 2010, Sumitomo Chemical purchased New Chemi. The deal's price was left undisclosed. Meanwhile, Otsuka Agritechno formed a joint venture with Insecticides India. Furthermore, ISK, a major Japanese agro firm, had conducted field trials of new pesticides with United Phosphorus in India. Other deals are likely to be announced soon after numerous Indian agrochemical manufacturers are in discussions with many global companies.
