Today, Google announced that it would launch 'Google Impact Challenge in India' in accordance with the upcoming Independence Day of the country. Google invited Indian nonprofits to elaborate on how they would utilize technology in improving people's lives.

Four nonprofits would each be given a Global Impact Award worth Rs 3 crore or about USD500,000 by the end of the challenge. All of the winners will have technical assistance from Google so that they could bring their respective projects to life.

Registered nonprofits from India could apply online until September 5. Google users from the country and all over the world will review the applications. A shortlist of ten projects will be announced on October 21.

"On the eve of India's Independence Day, we're celebrating the spirit of creativity and entrepreneurship of the world's largest democracy by spotlighting the best local nonprofits that are using technology to make the world better," Google's senior vice president and chief business officer, Nikesh Arora, stated through a blog post. "Growing up in India, I've seen firsthand the vibrancy and innovativeness of India's social entrepreneurs. I'm excited to see their projects and support their ideas for how to use technology and Rs 3 crores to change the world."
