'The Dark Tower' may feature Matthew McConaughey in a key role for the live action adaptation of Stephen King's popular fantasy series. He has been offered the parts for main protagonist Roland Deschain and villain Man in Black.

According to the Guardian, Matthew McConaughey may star in the upcoming live-action adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling fantasy series. The American actor-producer has been offered parts for main protagonist Roland Deschain and the villainous Man in Black. It remains unconfirmed whether he is up for playing the good guy or his antagonistic counterpart.

In the novels, Roland Deschain is a hero and the last of a long line of peacekeepers and diplomats known simply as the "gunslingers". He is the son of Gabrielle and Steven Deschain and a descendant of Arthur Eld, the ancient king of All-World comparable to the legendary King Arthur. The books follow Deschain's quest toward a tower known as the nexus of universes.

Deschain's counterpart, the Man in Black, is tasked at stopping Deschain from reaching the tower. According to another article by The Hollywood Reporter, King's novels are mostly set in an alternative world that incorporates elements of magic as well as dystopian and Western themes.

Nikolaj Arcel of 'A Royal Affair', 'Truth About Men' and 'King's Game' fame will be helming the film. It was reported that McConaughey met with Arcel recently to discuss the actor's potential involvement in the long-percolating 'The Dark Tower' big-screen adaptation.

Another article by /Film reported that McConaughey is also in negotiations for the planned television counterpart and not just for the cinematic release. Producers Akiva Goldsman, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins have been pushing for the adaptation for years. Javier Bardem was initially attached to play Deschain but eventually dropped out when the project moved from Universal to Sony.

'The Dark Tower' is an adventure-fantasy film adapted from Stephen King's popular book series of the same name. It is scheduled to be released on January 13, 2017. The film will center on a lone gunslinger who finds himself on an adventure across a desolate landscape towards a dark tower in hopes of preserving his dying world.
