While the second film ended on a positive note for Toothless and Hiccup, director Dean DeBlois revealed that the dragons will be absent in How to Train Your Dragon 3. Claims are also rampant suggesting possible spin-offs for the franchise.

The previous movie ended with peace restored while Toothless became the Alpha Dragon and Hiccup hailed as the chief of Berk. However, as reported by Latin Post, things will delve into a different path as director DeBlois confirmed that the third film will follow the story in the book.

"We're gonna take the story to where the book begin, which is Hiccup as an adult reflecting back on a time where there were dragons, suggesting that the dragons will in some way go away", DeBlois said. While it remains unconfirmed whether the dragons' disappearance  mean they will die or simply go into hiding, several speculations have surfaced as to its possible cause.

Moreover according to Movie Pilot, Drago's return was also confirmed which sparked speculations that his return might have to do with the absence of the Dragons. "You have to wait until the third film to actually see where Drago's character goes. He's a lot more complex than he's presented in this second installment", DeBlois revealed.

However, there are also theories suggesting that a war could also happen between Toothless and Hiccup which will ultimately lead to the disappearance of the Dragons. Meanwhile, as per report by Movie News Guide, new rumors have surfaced about possible spin-offs from the franchise.

According to the trade, spin-off plots include Hiccup and his mother's training of the dragons, or the adventures of Hiccup with Toothless. A story arc for Toothless finding love is possible to be explored as well.

Dean DeBlois is set to direct How To Train Your Dragon 3, while Jay Baruchel is set to return to voice as Hiccup along with Jonah Hill as Snotlout, and Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut among many others. It is set to hit theaters in June 29, 2018.
