Ontario-based BlackBerry Ltd has decided to acquire AtHoc to enhance its software offerings and increase its revenue. California-based AtHoc is a privately-held provider of secure, networked crisis communications.

BlackBerry's new chief John Chen revealed that its messaging app BBM now has 85 million monthly active users and a steady growth in its user base after the app was released to the Android and iOS platform in October.
Andrew Bocking, the Executive Vice President of BBM, exited Ontario, Canada-based smartphone and enterprise software maker BlackBerry, with the said division to be folded into Global Enterprise Solutions under the leadership of John Sims.
BlackBerry began testing its BlackBerry Messenger services on Android and iOS devices.
