Secret British spy unit Joint Threat Research Intelligent Group (JTRIG) launched a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack on US-based hacktivist group Anonymous' Internet chat rooms, according to leaked NSA documents obtained by NBC News.

Thirteen defendants said they were guilty of the cyber attack against PayPal three years ago. They were members of a hacker group known as Anonymous.

Akamai Technologies Inc said it will spend about $370 million to acquire Prolexic Technologies Inc, a pioneer in fighting distributed denial of service attacks, cyberthreats that cripple networks by overwhelming them with Internet traffic.

US investigators assigned to the hacking incidents done by Anonymous have yet to determine the scope of the cyber campaign of the hacker collective on the state's government agencies.
