That is why it is essential to promote loyalty among current employees rather than expend time and money on continuous recruitment and training. While employee satisfaction is a common topic when it comes to retaining workers, many employers run into a similar issue: how exactly can you measure employee engagement?

Employee engagement measures more than just how happy people are at a workplace. Assessing the engagement level of a worker also asks how loyal they are to their company, and how invested they are in seeing that company's brand succeed. The first step in promoting engagement among employees is to find out where it is currently lacking in the workplace. Employee engagement surveys can help improve a company's appeal and worker retention rates. Here is how it works:

What is Employee Engagement Survey Software?

Software for measuring employee engagement is a human resource management tool often used for reducing turnover and increasing profitability. Questions can either be general or targeted to a specific area of the workplace. These surveys are meant to find out what drives engagement for employees, be it pay, recognition, advancement opportunities, leadership behavior or something else.

One of the appeals of employee engagement survey software is that it can provide direct insight into what workers are thinking and what they value. Survey data can indicate problem areas within the workplace, directing management action into targeted improvement.

"When an employee is engaged, he/she trusts the people around them and feels an emotional connection to the brand," says employee engagement expert Jill Christensen. "Because of this, the employee goes above and beyond the call of duty and gives the organization a lot of discretionary effort."

When workers believe that they are heard and that their opinions make a difference, they are likely to feel more valued. If an employee believes that their ideas will be heard, then they are increasingly motivated to be innovative and assist in making the workplace a better environment for everyone.


There are a few different ways in which employee engagement surveys can be conducted. The most common option is an annual survey, which allows for a broad range of topics to be covered, indicating where problem areas may be in the workplace. These surveys are meant to be well rounded, but can only be administered so often as an employee must dedicate a somewhat substantial amount of time to completing it.

Another popular survey type is the pulse survey, which is usually administered quarterly or monthly. These are much shorter and often targeted at a specific element of the workplace. Pulse surveys are not very effective without larger, annual surveys that indicate areas that need improvement in the first place, but they are great for collecting data that follows a change over time.
