Ownership of recreational vehicles (RVs) is on the rise in the US, according to a fresh report. People in their early 30s to mid-50s are by far the most likely to own an RV, but Baby Boomers also account for a significant percentage of RVs owned in the United States.

Moreover, Baby Boomers are increasingly buying RVs, contributing to the growth of this particular segment of the automotive industry.

Why Are More and More Boomers Buying RVs?

Over the past few years, a growing number of Boomers have been purchasing RVs. This is ultimately down to Boomers being drawn to the flexibility that RVs offer and their other advantages, such as affordability.

The trend of more Boomers going on RV vacations is, at least partly, also due to their preferences changing. However, many Boomers still enjoy or even prefer other types of vacations, but are giving RVs a go as they want to be more adventurous and try something new.

In the long run, buying an RV can be a much better investment (at least from a financial point of view) instead of solely going on other types of more expensive vacations that Boomers love, especially cruises.

So, all things considered, this is trend is primarily being driven by Boomers perhaps becoming more budget-conscious when traveling and them wanting to have a bit more variety with regards to their travels.

Will This Trend Continue?

Over the next few years at least, it seems likely that we will continue to see more and more Baby Boomers buying RVs.

The COVID-19 pandemic will almost guarantee this, as many Boomers are understandably fearful of traveling on long-haul flights or commercial flights of any description, due to the increased risk of contracting the virus, even with safety protocols such as face masks and social distancing in place.

Indeed, a recent survey found that Americans across all generations are changing their vacation plans in response to COVID-19, with many now only considering vacations that are closer to home and don't put them at a heightened risk of being infected.

An RV vacation is, therefore, the perfect choice in these crazy times, as you don't have to go through a busy airport and don't even have to come into contact with anyone outside of your household or established "bubble".

A Quick Summary

  • Americans are buying more RVs than ever, according to a new report.

  • This growth is coming from all segments of the population, including Baby Boomers, who are increasingly giving RV vacations ago.

  • This is partly because some Boomers are becoming more budget conscious and are looking to get more bang for their buck when it comes to traveling, while others are going on RV vacations in addition to cruises and other types of vacations as they want to try something new.

  • We can expect this trend to continue in the short term, especially as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is changing travel plans and preferences.

  • In particular, many Boomers are trying to avoid commercial flights and busy cruises, as they don't want to put themselves at an increased risk of contracting the virus.

  • An RV vacation is a great way to go on vacation without coming into contact with anyone outside your bubble.
