Spider-Man's film history gets more complicated every year. Currently, the character is set for a reboot and will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year, starting with an appearance in Captain America: Civil War, then with his own rebooted film in 2017, and then (presumably) an appearance in the Avengers: Infinity War films. Because why go through all the work to get Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe if he's not going to show up in the Avengers?

But things continue to get confusing as to the status of Andrew Garfield in these films. Some fans still seem to claim that Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, will still be involved with the film, as will Emma Stone, who played Gwen Stacy in the same films.

Is it possible? Could Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone end up in the next round of Spider-Man films? If so, it could cause a major screwup for Marvel and the next Spider-Man film's 2017 premiere.

However, recent news indicates that Garfield and Stone are gone for good. Recently, it was reported that Asa Butterfield, who starred in Ender's Game in 2013, is now the frontrunner to appear as Peter Parker in the next Spider-Man film. Butterfield is 18, which is a marked difference from Andrew Garfield, who was 27 by the time the first Amazing Spider-Man film entered production.

As well, other rumors indicate that Garfield's time in this franchise is over for good. Both Kevin Feige (the man in charge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and the Sony execs want a fresh face for the new Spider-Man.

Another rumor claims what may be the title for the next Spider-Man film: Spider-Man: The New Avenger. Which, if true, would firmly place the wall-crawling hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel's rebooted Spider-Man film will premiere on July 28, 2017.
