The buzz started last September and it got louder, much like the epic soundtrack that brought thrill to fans as much as the movie did, when Tinseltown started tinkering with the thought of launching "Top Gun 2," which would reprise the role of superstar Tom Cruise as Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell.

Tom Cruise already expressed excitement over the pending project. This was also shared by producer Jerry Bruckheimer who's pushing for the production to go ahead ASAP. Reports also pointed out that Paramount and Skydance already had a writer for the sequel.

Although, Cruise might be currently busy with the fifth installment of the "Mission Impossible" movie series, he had already confirmed his commitment to the 1986 hit movie's sequel. He added that whatever challenges they might face during production "would be fun to do."

With Cruise having said yes to the role, Bruckheimer producing the film and "The Jungle Book's" Justin Marks to whip the script, the next major part to fill in would be the director's seat. No definite name had been officially released to replace the original director, Tony Scott, who had already passed away. However, there had been rumors that perhaps his brother Ridley would take the helm.

Bruckheimer imparted what fans of the original film might expect on the sequel. He said that with the use of unmanned drones as aerial defense, part of Maverick's mission would be to prove everyone that fighter pilots were not yet obsolete.

The anticipated project went public last September revealing that the sequel's script had been in formulation since 2012, before the passing of director Tony Scott. The project regained traction when Bruckheimer took in an associate, Marks, to continue to the development of the script.

"Top Gun 2's" production had not yet been officially set and challenges on the story line would also need to be ironed out; however, the even bigger concern is that lingering anticipation of Maverick's fans to have him, once again, take their breath away.
