WhatsApp and WeChat are two of the most popular messaging apps in the market today, and with having similar features and running on most devices, it is hard to pick which one is better. WhatsApp has the advantage of working on several platforms.

According to The REM, WhatsApp is considered as the best among messaging apps, simply because it can be used across different platforms. WhatsApp works on both smartphones and tablets, and it is offered for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Asha, Blackberry, and Symbian devices. Aside from using the app as a free messaging tool, it can also be used to share small files. Also according to The REM, "Audio messages can be sent and video messages can be sent too, as can be the location you are in."

The one downside to using WhatsApp is that after the first year of use it will charge $0.99 annually for non-iOS users. Users of iOS devices will have to pay the $0.99 since first use. According to Ordoh, "As long as you have an active WhatsApp subscription and good Internet connection, you are able to send any messages to your contacts easily."

As for WeChat, it can do most of the things that WhatsApp can do, but it is not offered for as many devices. According to The REM, it is available for Nokia S40, Windows Phone, Blackberry, iOS devices, and Android smartphones. It can be used to send texts and share locations, photos, videos, contact information, and files. "A plug in can be installed, that is location based, so international chats can be done," adds The REM. The app also allows for video calls. Additionally, Ordoh mentions that users can use QR codes to connect with people.

The latest version of WeChat also allows for walkie talkie sessions, adds KpopStarz.

Both apps require registration with a valid phone number, The REM shares. This is because the apps use your contact list to see which of your contacts already have the apps installed. They can be added automatically to your friends list.

WhatsApp and WeChat are not the only options as messaging apps. According to Ordoh, the cross-platform app called Viber is another good choice. "Viber can be used to help you make Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system," says the article.
