Nigerian Business Tycoon Alhaji Dangote Tops Forbes Richest Black People List for Third Straight Year; Number of Black Women Billionaire Up To Three

The 2014 Black Billionaires List features 9 black people -- 6 men and 3 women. Last year, there were only 7 black people. The people appearing in this list derived their wealth from investments in different fields such as industrial, technological, and commercial business ventures throughout the world.

Nigerian cement tycoon Aliko Dangote once again holds the top spot as the richest black person. He has a huge lead over 2nd placed Mohammed Al-Amjoudi. In 2013, there were only two women in the list namely Oprah Winfrey and Isabel dos Sanrtos. This year, Nigerian oil magnate Folorunsho Alakija brought the number of black women billionaire in the list to 3.

The people in this list are a living testimony that color or race is not a hindrance in becoming famous or successful. Here now are the Top 9 richest black people in the world according to Forbes Magazine.

9. Mohammed Ibrahim - $1.1 billion

Sudanese-British businessman Mo Ibrahim is the founder of mobile company Celtel. In 2005, he sold his company shares for $3.4 billion and is now involved in helping his fellow Africans through his businesses and by being a philantrophist. In 2007, he founded the Mo Ibrahim Foundation which is geared towards promoting good governance and grants $5 million to worthy African heads of state.

The founder of Famfa Oil, Folorunsho Alakija is the first female billionaire that comes from Nigeria. She began her career as a secretary from a Nigerian merchant bank in the 1970s before quitting her job to study fashion design in England. She then founded a fashion label catering to upscale clienteles upon returning to Nigeria.

6. Oprah Winfrey - $2.9 billion

Known as the "Queen of Talk" when her talk show dominated the industry through “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Oprah Winfrey is the Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Harpo Productions and Oprah Winfrey Network. She is the richest African American in history and is also considered as the world’s most influential woman.

5. Patrice Motsepe - $2.9 billion
South African mining magnate Patrice Motsepe is the founder and Chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, a company with interests in gold, platinum, base and ferrous metals. He is likewise Chairman of Harmony Gold, the world’s 12th biggest gold mining company. He is also the owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, a football club playing in the South African Premier Soccer League.

4. Isabel dos Santos - $3.7 billion

The daughter of Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, Isabel is considered as the richest woman in Africa and the first female billionaire from that region. Born in Azerbaijan, she has substantial investments in Angola and Portugal particularly in media, retail, telecommunications, finance, and energy.

3. Mike Adenuga - $4.6 billion
Nigerian businessman Mike Adenuga got his wealth by venturing into the oil and telecommunications industry. He began by handling construction projects in the 1980's before being handed a license for oil production. He established Conoil Producing Limited, one of the largest explorers in Nigeria, and also Globacom, the second largest mobile phone provider in Africa.

2. Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Moudi - $15.3 billion

Saudi Arabian-Ethiopian businessman Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Amoudi is regarded as Ethiopia’s richest man and the second richest in Saudi Arabia. His construction firm the Mohammed International Development Research and Organization Companies (MIDROC) is the company behind Saudi Arabia’s nationwide underground storage complex worth $30 billion. He also owns oil refineries in Sweden and Ethiopia and hotels in Addis Ababa.


1. Alhaji Aliko Dangote - $25 billion
For the third year in a row, Alhaji Aliko Dangote is the richest black person in the world. He owns the Dangote Group, with commodities in Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Cameroon, Zambia, and South Africa. His company ranks as the largest industrial conglomerate in the Western African region and he is considered as the top employer in Nigeria.
