Chinese messaging app WeChat undergoes major upgrade

After Facebook acquired WhatsApp, messaging apps suddenly surged to popularty. Amid the craze about these apps, WeChat has launched a major upgrade for its iOS and Android versions, according to TechCrunch.

WeChat's Version 5.2.0.17 has new features including real-time location sharing, chat history search, group chat mention notification, and sticker sharing with friends. It also boasts of "better image browsing in chats" and improved audio and video quality during calls, the report detailed.

The Android version of the app has a new look and Friend Radar feature. Users can also serach througth their contacts and have the option of displaying their LinkedIn information on their accounts, the report added.

With the consolidation of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, other similar apps may also be considering the same option in the near future. In addition, these apps appear to be on its way to penetrate both SMS and voice calling sectors as well, TechCrunch reported.
