Waste management firm Viridor has announced that it has invested in a £25-million glass recycling plant located at Newhouse, Lanarkshire. The said facility is set to become fully operational by fall, according to MRW.

The glass recycling plant is capable of processing 200,000 tons of glass every year. This capability is enough to recycle one-and-a-half times of the glass packaging that Scotland presently collects per annum. Viridor said the facility will help Scotland become less dependent on imported materials for beverage bottles, the report detailed.

The facility will collect glass from 17 local authorities in Scotland and recover 97% of the input. The glass recycling infrastructure will be able to produce 300 full-time jobs in Scotland, the report said.

John Swinney, cabinet secretary for finance and employment, said of the project: "This state-of-the-art recycling centre will provide high quality material to businesses, while helping towards our ambition of becoming a zero waste nation."
