UK-based daily newspaper Daily Telegraph announced on Tuesday that its editor,Tony Gallagher, has left the company as it undergoes a restructuring program. The media firm is hoping to be better prepared to focus more on digital publishing, according to Al Arabiya News.

Rival companies said Gallagher had been fired and that this move has been a shock to his co-workers at the British newspaper firm, the report said.

However, Telegraph Media Group Chief Executive Murdoch MacLennan said the media company just needs to sharpen its focus on digital publishing, the report explained.

Reuters quoted MacLennan saying: "Unlike our rivals, The Telegraph remains profitable but we face increasing pressure on circulation and advertising revenue streams. To protect the Company's future, we need rapidly to embrace and adapt to the new digital world in which our customers live."

Tony Gallagher had been the editor of the Daily Telegraph since 2009, Al Arabiya News reported.
