Anglo American Platinum Limited (AMS), in its goal to regain profitability, plans to cut down employment from its South Africa head office. About 900 job positions may be dismissed as added to the already planned 6,000 mass lay off. Known as the largest producer of metal, AMS or Amplats, has agreed with labor unions to reduce staff and cut production by 350,000 ounces.

According to Alwyn van Heerden, head of UASA union, the company has agreed to terminate not exceeding 4,138 jobs. Meanwhile, Joseph Mathunjwa, president of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union has not issued any official statement yet regarding the company's decision.

Lesiba Seshoka, National Union of Mineworkers spokesperson, said through an interview that Amplats is not following what they have agreed upon. They agreed that there will be about 3,000 job cuts, mainly voluntary and redeployment. The company is finding means to limit the production costs following the strike last year wherein 12,967 mining workers were reportedly terminated.
