After reports surfaced about the arrest of Madonna's 16-year-old son, Rocco Ritchie, the pop icon has made it clear to the public that she will stand by his son in facing this legal problem which she called a "family matter."

The singer's son who has been living with his father Guy Ritchie, was arrested last Sept. 28 after the London police discovered a small quantity of cannabis in his bag. According to Scotland Yard through an official statement, the arrest follows a stop and search by officers from Camden borough at around 5:15 p.m.

"Rocco was dealt with by way of Triage, which uses multiple strands to engage and educate young people in order to prevent re-offending," the statement furthered.

Rocco was reported to the police by his neighbors who complained about him smoking or doing drugs.

"I love my son very much. I will do whatever I can to give him the support that he needs, and I ask that you respect our privacy at this time," Madonna said in a statement released to PEOPLE.

Madonna and husband of eight years before their split in 2008 had a custody battle which concluded early in September. The dispute began in December 2015 and dragged for almost nine months.

Madonna and Ritchie decided to sort things out between themselves for the sake of their teenaged son.  And hours before they were due in court, they came to an agreement that Rocco will remain in his father's custody in the U.K. The specific terms of the custody agreement remain confidential although it is known that Rocco is schooled in London and is visited regularly by his mother.

Guy Ritchie has not yet released any statement regarding their son's arrest.
